The Bulls’ Joe van Zyl Says the Role of Hooker Has Changed in Modern Rugby
Everything you need to know about the responsibilities of The Bulls’ hooker, Joe van Zyl.
Joe van Zyl is one of the rising stars of the Vodacom Bulls, and knows that there’s a lot of expectation on the modern No. 2, as having all the right skills is crucial in making an impact.
“There’s a lot more responsibility being a hooker these days. They won’t really pick a hooker that specialises in one thing,” says Van Zyl when speaking to Cato Louw on Brightrock’s new show, 1 to 15: What rugby players actually do!
But, according to van Zyl, the role of a hooker has changed for the better. Van Zyl goes on to explain how, in the past, “you could have been a running hooker, you could have been an extra prop, a strong, physical ball carrier,” but these days the role of hooker is more about versatility.
The role of a hooker on the rugby field requires precision and explosiveness. Hookers are just as strong as the props, but with a little extra speed and agility. You’ll find them in the scrum, ruck, maul or a lineout. Like many of the backs, they need to have ball skills, great footwork, and speed to be able to do what they do best.
In the latest episode of 1 to 15, the talented forward, along with his strength and conditioning coach, Andre Volsteedt, provides some insight into the versatile roles and responsibilities that a hooker requires on the modern rugby field. Watch as Joe van Zyl breaks down his role on the field and digs a little deeper into his life off the field with Cato Louw:
