The electric car revolution is quietly underway across the globe, but there’s no doubt that switching from good ole combustion engine to an EV isn’t the cheapest thing to do. However, a few brands are trying to make it more appealing with some more ‘affordable’ options on the market. We’ve rounded up 3 that keep costs in mind when offering an electric driving experience.

Geely E2 Aspire

Price: R339,900

In South Africa, the Geely E2 will be offered in two specification grades: Aspire and the range-topping Apex, both designed to deliver strong value and everyday usability. Specifically speaking about the Aspire, you get an 85 kW electric motor, LFP battery, 325km driving range, 130 km/h top speed, and fast charging (up to 70 kW). On top of that, the sleek hatchback design features a large touchscreen, instrument display, and advanced driver assistance systems.

BYD Dolphin Surf Comfort

Price: R339,900

It’s got a strange name, but BYD’s small electric vehicle is here to give South Africans a more affordable plug-in option. It features a 55 kW electric motor, BYD’s blade battery, 30 kW fast charging, 300 km driving range, 130 km/h top speed, and a host of additional features, such as rear cameras to help with parking.

Dongfeng Box E1

Price: R459,000

A fair bit more expensive, but still in the entry-level market for electric vehicles, is the Dongfeng Box E1. It features a 70 kW electric motor with a range of 271 km, a top speed of 140 km/h, along with a bunch of internal features like an infotainment screen, cameras, and cruise control. It’s a bit larger, so also a bit more suitable for a familly as opposed to the hatchback options from other brands.
