Simply being a smartwatch isn’t going to cut it these days. With so many options on the market, users are looking for a device that brings the interconnectivity of a smart wearable, pairing with your phone and delivering notifications and features without the fuss of using your actual phone, along with the added benefits such as health and fitness tracking. Of course, if it can look sophisticated and sporty too, that’s an extra bonus.

Thankfully, the Huawei Watch GT 4 ticks all these boxes, offering a really comprehensive product that solves the smart-device demands while also satisfying the need of being a workout companion. It is not without its drawbacks though.

Design

From a design perspective, the Watch GT 4 is the most masculine-looking watch to date (there is a Pendant design for the ladies out there), with a more geometric Octagon bezel design framing the 46mm face. It’s large but non-bulky and doesn’t have any edges or obtuse pieces that would poke into your wrist or forearm with normal everyday movements. You can tell that Huawei wants this watch to be worn during workouts.

Users can choose between a classic Brown Leather Strap, dynamic Rainforest Green GMT and Black Rubber Strap models to suit their style, but we really appreciated the interesting Rainforest Green strap (made from Glass Mat Reinforced Thermoplastics), as it has a soft, smooth feel and paired well with the steel body finish to give that aviation and military-watch look.

The watch face itself can obviously be changed to suit the type of appearance you want — whether it be a more traditional analogue design or a digital readout of the time, date, and metrics; and there are over 25,000 options (some free and some paid-for), so it’s safe to say, you’ll find something you like. The display is also bright and vivid, with impressive viewing angles and an anti-glare feature allowing you to see the details even in direct sunlight.

In action

The Huawei Watch GT 4 pairs seamlessly to any Android and iOS device, although there is an ease of use while using a Huawei phone, as it seems to find and connect faster, likely due to the pairing devices running on similar operating systems (the Watch GT 4 runs on Huawei’s HarmonyOS). You will need the Huawei Health App though irrespective of which device you’re using in order to actually utilise the watch’s features.

Basic notifications, standard health updates, and a handful of pre-installed apps await you on the device, allowing you to get a snapshot of what’s happening on your phone, steps, and how your heart rate is looking (among a few other things that most wearable users will be familiar with). But if you really want to dive into the insights that the GT 4 can offer with regard to your workouts, nutrition, and more specific health metrics, you’ll need to set up the Huawei Health App with your details.

The more advanced tracking elements come courtesy of the True Scene 5.5 heart rate monitor and a dual-band 5 GNSS system radio, which are both said to help drastically increase the accuracy of tracking over its predecessor, the Watch GT 3. You therefore get a more realistic measurement of your heart-rate and all the spin-off metrics that can be extrapalated from that.

Additionally, there is a calorie tracker, which keeps tabs on calorie intake via the Kcal app that can put a calorie intake plan together for you, helping monitor daily calories, whether you want to maintain or lose weight depending on your settings. So, if you’re someone who struggles to keep an eye on all these numbers, it can definitely add some value to your eating habits and nutrition throughout the day, alleviating you to think about other things, like the weather or Superbru predictions.

Outdoor sports are also a focus of the Watch GT 4, and while it’s not the most minimal sporty design purpose-built for the football field, you can set the GT 4 to capture more burst and ball-orientated sporting activities, giving you an adjusted report on those more stop/start sports that other wearables struggle to track accurately.

There is also an updated sleep tracking feature that can provide some results on your sleep quality, patterns, and breathing if you’re perhaps having some restless nights and want to explore what’s happening when you’re tossing and turning. Speaking of well-being, you can also use the Watch GT 4 to track other people’s health (in a way), as the Family Health feature can notify you of a notable change in a family member’s heart rate, if they’re also using a Watch GT 4, of course.

Pay-less

Something to note about the Watch GT 4 is that it currently doesn’t have a payment feature as of now. There is the Huawei Wallet functionality built into it, where you can add your cards, but it’s not active in the South African region just yet.

Verdict

The Huawei Watch GT 4 is a dynamic device that can essentially replace the need for having two (or perhaps even three) other devices, giving you something that functions as a slick smartwatch, an admittedly advanced fitness tracker, and a reliable health companion, not to mention having great battery-life. The lack of payment features (currently) is a bit of a downer, but as for its core functionality and features, it’s an impressive wearable that improves upon everything the Watch GT 3 offers.

Pricing and availability

The Huawei Watch GT 4 is available for R6,999.
