Toyota has officially unveiled the next-generation of its Hilux bakkie set for release in South Africa in 2026.

Toyota is placing a notable emphasis on electric-based power with the new Hilux, but traditional combustion-engine models are being released too. Availability of these diesel models is yet to be confirmed.

All grades of the new HiLux, both in 4X2 and 4X4 configurations, are powered by Toyota’s venerable 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, producing maximum outputs of 150kW of power and 500Nm of torque when paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.  Variants fitted with a six-speed manual transmission develop a maximum 420Nm of torque.

The new HiLux also marks a significant milestone in the history of the legendary pick-up, with the introduction of the first-ever battery-electric powertrain aimed to help fleet and business customers reduce the tailpipe emissions of their light-commercial fleets.

Furthermore, Toyota has confirmed that a hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV) variant is scheduled to join the lineup in 2028. The new option is aimed to offer customers even greater choice while reinforcing Toyota’s multi-pathway approach to decarbonisation.

Exterior

The frontal treatment includes slim new headlight units linked by a central bar which carries the Toyota name in classic style. On the BEV model, the aero treatment dispenses with the traditional grille and dedicated alloy wheels are fitted. New features for all versions include a new rear deck step for easy access; selected models have a redesigned side step.

With the new generation, Hilux moves to one body style – the Double Cab – in line with customer preference. In the cabin, there is an all-round elevation in sensory quality, influenced by the new Toyota Land Cruiser. The centre console has a new horizontal design, incorporating (according to grade) a 12.3-inch, customisable driver’s combimeter and central multimedia touchscreen (up to 12.3 inches).

All the AWD and off-road controls are centrally grouped for ease of operation; the BEV model adopts a single-action shift-by-wire drive selector. Ensuring connectivity requirements are met, Hilux is available (according to equipment grade) with a wireless device charger and new USB ports in the rear of the cab.

New Hilux owners can access remote and connected services using the MyToyota app, convenient for both private and business/fleet customers. Fleet managers can view data from up to 10 vehicles, including location, fuel level and EV charging status, and driving analytics such as journey history.

This is also the first Hilux to be equipped with electric power steering, with the benefits of more direct operation, easier manoeuvrability and less risk of kick-back when driving over uneven ground.

The features included in Hilux’s advanced safety and driving assistance package have been significantly extended. The new model will be available (according to grade and local market) with a wealth of new and upgraded functions, including an extension of Toyota Safety Sense to include Low Speed Acceleration Suppression, Proactive Driving Assist and an Emergency Driving Stop System. New over-the-air updates will provide seamless upgrades when available.

Other new items include (among others) a Blind Spot Monitor, Safe Exit Assist and a Driver Monitor Camera.

Specific details around pricing and availability for South Africa will be released by Toyota in due time.
