How To Avoid “Toxic” Clothes While Still Getting Hold of International Brands
South Africans can still access international brands and clothing without the risks.
Well, it seems like the old adages really are true: you get what you pay for, and if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Because, according to French news agency AFP, many cost-affordable clothing and apparel items from the likes of Shien, AliExpress, and Temu, have been found to contain toxic chemicals.
The tests were conducted as part of weekly inspections of products sold online in South Korea. The products that allegedly failed the tests include shoes from fast fashion giant Shein, which were said to contain high levels of phthalates. One pair tested by the authorities were reportedly 229 times over the legal limit. Shein hats were also reportedly tested positive for formaldehyde (not good), two bottles of nail polish from Shein were found to have dioxane ( a possible human carcinogen that can cause liver poisoning) at levels more than 3.6 times the allowed limit, and methanol concentrations 1.4 times above the acceptable level.
Furthermore, the Seoul authorities found sandals from Temu containing lead in the insoles at levels more than 11 times the permissible limit.
Now, the retailers have since acknowledged the news and shown concern with investigations into the matter underway.
