Honor 50 Review — A Mid-Range Vlogger’s Dream?

Hands-on with the new Honor 50 smartphone.

The highly-anticipated Honor 50 has finally arrived in South Africa. Described by the brand as its first vlogging smartphone, the device was designed with content creators and bloggers in mind. If you’re in the market for a smartphone with a camera that rivals its competitors, then this new arrival from Honor is sure to help you get a leg up in the social media game.

The Honor 50 comes with GMS and features Qualcomm’s SnapdragonTM 778G Mobile Platform. The premium model is equipped with multi-video shooting modes, with combinations that use the front and rear cameras at the same time. In just one take it allows the users to choose from six modes which make the vlogging experience fun, exciting and engaging.

The device also boasts a 6.57-inch 75° curved OLED display, 4300 mAh battery, and 66W SuperCharge technology, enabling the battery to be charged over 70% in just 20 minutes. The Honor 50 will be available in South Africa in two vibrant colour options – Frost Crystal and Midnight Black.

The OLED display has a sharp 1080 x 2340p resolution and boasts a dynamic 120Hz display refresh rate. The result is a super-smooth experience when using visually demanding apps, but you can also reduce the rate for less demanding tasks and apps, to save on battery. The device’s 300Hz touch sampling rate means it is also very responsive when gaming, making it a great device for anyone who likes to dabble in mobile gaming when out and about. The screen on the Honor 50 is indeed impressive and offers everything you could want at this price point.

Get ready to shoot

Equipped with a 32MP front camera with a 90o viewing angle, users can take perfect selfies and videos, with more people and scenery captured in the frame. With its quad rear camera setup — featuring a 108MP main camera, an 8MP wide-angle camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth camera — the Honor 50 allows users to shoot photos and videos in ultra-clarity and in great detail, even at night.

Giving users more flexibility to shoot content from different angles and perspectives, users can change between cameras with six multi-video shooting modes that use the front and rear cameras at the same time. Offering even more choice when it comes to capturing content, users can also apply beauty mode, capture photographs from videos, and use pre-set video story templates on all their footage. In addition, wireless headsets connected via Bluetooth can be used as wireless microphones during video capture. Creators can achieve better sound reception while shooting videos, providing an effortless vlogging experience.

Multi-Video Shooting Modes for One Take Recording

The Honor 50 is equipped with six multi-video shooting modes, with combinations that use the front and rear cameras at the same time. In just one take, users can choose from the following six modes to make the vlogging experience fun, exciting and engaging:

Front to Rear Recording: Users can switch between the front and rear camera while shooting video content.
Dual-View Recording (Front/Rear): Users can simultaneously shoot with both the front camera and the rear main camera. The dual view shows what is captured by both cameras side by side.
Dual-View Recording (Rear/Rear): Users can shoot with both the rear main camera and the wide-angle camera at the same time. The main camera also supports 6x zoom while video shooting. The dual view shows what is captured by both cameras side by side.
Picture in Picture: This mode allows users to overlay the view of the front camera onto the bigger view of the rear camera or vice versa. It is particularly useful if users want the audience to focus on the content, but still, let them see the person recording.
Fast -Motion Recording & Slow-Motion Recording: This mode allows users to capture the object or themselves with slow or fast motion effects, creating a cool and unique layer to video content.
Single to Dual-View Recording: Users can also change from shooting in single camera to dual cameras at any time while recording.

An insta-worthy shooter?

But is the Honor 50s camera a must-have for social media stars? The 108-megapixel main camera is, of course, the champion of the camera setup on the Honor 50 and helps users capture some very impressive shots. The sensor is super-strong, performing well in a variety of different lighting conditions and delivering good levels of detail. Using the camera in default mode, you get vibrant, accurate colours with a good balance between light and dark areas of the shot. The device also performs well under low-light conditions, but you do need to use the Honor 50’s Night mode setting for the best results.

The device’s 32-megapixel selfie snapper is also impressive. In the main mode, this camera works well, but using Portrait mode with the ‘bokeh effect’ applied there are some imperfections and blurring in images. If you love taking selfies with friends, the Honor 50 has your back as the system automatically recognises when more people are in the shot and switches to a wider field of view to fit them in.

As for video shooting, there are a few different video camera features bloggers will love. The camera system lets you seamlessly switch between the front and rear lenses without disrupting filming, and you can shoot on both sides at the same time, giving you the ability to create dynamic content whenever and wherever.

The Honor 50 is a great phone across the board. You get a stunning screen, a fantastic selfie camera, a decent main camera, speedy performance and excellent battery life, all packed into a slim handset that won’t leave a huge dent in your pocket when you go out and buy one. Considering its price point, this device is well worth considering if you’re in the market for a mid-range Android smartphone with Google services built-in.

The Honor 50 (8GB+256GB) is now available in South Africa at a recommended price of R13,999. The Honor 50 Lite (8+128 GB) will also be available at R5,499.
