The horror genre is experiencing a truly golden age with some stellar releases coming out. However, with so many films hitting cinemas and streaming services weekly, it’s easy to overlook some. We’ve rounded up some of the recent and most harrowing horrors you may have missed.

Evil Dead Burn

While the Evil Dead franchise has always been a big drawcard, this most recent entry in the series seemed to have slipped under the radar. Directed by Sébastien Vaniček and produced by Sam Raimi, this entry continues the chaos caused by the Book of the Dead, and revolves around a testy family reunion after an unfortunate death. As the Deadites are introduced, things get pretty wild, to say the least. Like all Evil Dead movies, the boundaries are pushed in terms of grossness and cringe-inducing gore, and there are some interesting connections to the overarching universe and original Evil Dead films.

Dark Nature

A relatively small but underappreciated gem, Dark Nature takes a slow-burn approach, following a group of women who head out into the wilderness on a wellness retreat. Things go haywire as they’re stalked from the forest and the women have to deal with something a lot more dangerous than their own demons. It’s a great movie that takes some interesting turns and should be checked out if you love those backpacking, nature-based horror flicks.

Iron Lung

Based on the video game of the same name and made by YouTuber Markiplier, Iron Lung is a pretty barebones but brilliantly-executed horror outing. It follows a man who has to delve into the depths of an alien ocean on a distant planet in a tiny, one-man powered submarine. The film does a great job of keeping your interest despite being entirely set in one location, and the claustrophobic atmosphere and looming threat leave a constant state of dread during its watchtime.

Do Not Enter

Do Not Enter is a fun creature feature that plays out like a heist movie gone wrong. It follows a group of urban explorers who head into a dilapidated hotel in hopes of finding a hidden $300 million fortune. However, they soon find themselves being picked off by a supernatural entity lurking throughout the hotel.

Hokum

One of the most interesting horror directors in Hollywood is Damian McCarthy. His Irish indie film Caveat is the perfect example of the dread he can bring to the big-screen, followed by the unnerving horror of Oddity (honestly, one of the scariest movies ever made). His most recent film Hokum film stars Adam Scott and continues the obscure, haunting imagery and slow-burn tension he’s known for. It follows a writer who visits an Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, unaware that the property is said to be haunted by a witch.
