Things are heating up in the compact SUV segment here in SA. The price war has never been more competitive as manufacturers duke it out to give consumers the most appealing offer on the road. While its competitors seem to be grabbing consumer attention with luxury exterior looks, Jaecoo is playing the long game with the most competitive pricing, better quality interior fittings, and more capable tech.

Jumping into the Jaecoo J5 for the first time was a refreshing experience. I’ve been fortunate enough to get behind the wheel of a wide range of compact SUVs lately, and to be frank, my expectations for the J5 were low. With prices starting at R339,00 for the J5 Core, I expected an underwhelming interior, spotty tech, and a lacklustre driving experience.

Instead, the J5 served as a reminder that the compact SUV segment is more exciting than its ever been. Available in Core, Vortex, Glacier and Inferno trims, the capable J5 offers style, comfort, and the latest tech to bring consumers a very enticing pick for a family SUV. Starting from its value-focused Core trim at R339,000 to its feature-packed Inferno at R479,900, the J5 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and boasts a strong spec list including key safety systems, modern tech, and practical everyday usability.

Classic good looks

On the outside, the J5’s classic silhouette gives it a distinct premium aesthetic that makes it stand out from the rest of the crowd. The compact SUV boasts a bold front grille flanked by slim, high-mounted headlights. The overall design is minimalistic and clean, with squared-off wheel arches. The Core, Vortex and Glacier come standard with 17-inch wheels, while Inferno drivers get the added cool factor of 18-inch alloys.

All four models benefit from a fashionable rear light bar, providing the J5 with a sophisticated presence. LED headlights are standard on the Glacier and Inferno. Convenience features across the lineup include power-adjustable side mirrors, a heated rear window, rear parking sensors, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers. The Core, Vortex, and Glacier all offer a reverse camera and reverse parking sensors, while the Inferno offers the upgrade of a front parking sensor and a 540-degree Panoramic View.

Whichever model you choose, the quality of the J5’s reverse camera and sensors must be commended. While its competitors’ camera and parking assist systems can feel clunky, spotty and low-tech, the system in the J5 feels a lot more premium and capable.

A premium-feel interior

Inside, the J5 is just as impressive. The J5’s interior cabin feels surprisingly premium considering its price points across the range. I had preconceived ideas of a plastic, low-quality interior, but the interior is comfortable and feels just as sturdy and long-wearing as European brand compact SUVs that come in at almost double the price of the J5.

The cabin is spacious and comes equipped with a host of luxury and convenience features. In the Core, you get a nine-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while the Vortex upgrades this to a 13.2-inch infotainment display. USB and USB Type-C ports in the front row ensure convenient device charging, making the Core an appealing choice for buyers seeking up-to-date technology and everyday comfort at an accessible price point.

Looking at tech and interior finishes, the Core and Vortex variants include black cloth upholstery, six-way driver and four-way passenger seat adjustment, automatic climate control, power-adjustable side mirrors, an eight-inch digital driver’s cluster, and a four-speaker audio system.

The Glacier builds on this with leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a six-speaker sound system, and additional upgrades. The Inferno adds dual-zone climate control, a powered tailgate, ventilated front seats, a wireless charger, and an eight-speaker Jaecoo sound system, along with several other premium features.

For keen travellers, you get plenty of space to pack everything you need in the spacious J5. Practicality remains a strong point with this compact SUV. The J5 offers 480 litres of luggage capacity — expanding to 1,284 litres with the 60:40 split folding rear seats stowed away. The vehicle also boasts a 750 kg towing capacity.

Behind the wheel

The J5 is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine developing 115 kW and 230 N.m of torque. With three driving modes available (Eco, Normal, and Sport), the J5 offers variable driving experiences to suit your preference. On the road, the J5 offers a smooth drive and feels capable underfoot across all driving modes. You feel like you have enough power to confidently overtake on the highway, cruise uphill, or take off at an intersection; and there’s an undeniable solid ‘feel’ to the entire turning and driving experience.

If you’re worried about rising petrol prices in South Africa, fuel consumption across the J5 lineup is decent with a claimed 7.5L/100 km on the combined cycle. This gives the J5 Core a theoretical driving range of around 680 km between fill-ups.

Safety is at the core of the J5 with an extensive list of standard systems. The J5 comes equipped with anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability program (ESP), brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), hill descent control, traction control, and ISOFIX child seat attachments, among other safety features. Dual front and front side airbags are standard on all trims, with the Glacier and Inferno adding side curtain airbags to the package.

When it comes to offering a well-equipped compact SUV at an accessible price point, Jaecoo has hit the nail on the head with the J5. In the growing market of compact SUVs, it’s hard to ignore the J5. It’s the most capable and most impressive compact SUV I’ve driven thus far, and there’s no doubt you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck with this Jaecoo model.

The J5 lineup is backed by Jaecoo’s extensive after-sales package, including a five-year/150,000 km warranty and 10-year/1,000,000 km engine warranty.
