If you’re deciding to visit the local theatres this long weekend, you’ll be glad to know that there’s a variety of new movies on offer, including a superhero team to light things up, a comedy to deliver the laughs, a horror to scare you frozen, and a whole lot more.
Fantastic Four
International critics haven’t been too kind to the anticipated Fantastic Four reboot, but it releases in SA this weekend to the excitement of a lot of Marvels who are keen to see a new spin on the dynamic superpowered foursome. The film stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell as the Fantastic Four, a group who gain extraordinary abilities after teleporting to an alternate and dangerous universe. They must learn to use their new powers and work together to save the planet from a former friend turned enemy (Toby Kebbell).
Trainwreck
Amy Schumer is the name on everyone’s lips at the moment. The comedian has been making a name for herself with her crude and pin-point comedy, and she stars in her first full-feature film directed by Judd Apatow. Trainwreck follows a commitment-phobic career woman (Schumer) who thinks monogamy is not possible, but may have to face her fears when she meets a good guy.
The Vatican Tapes
Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond) and Michael Pena (Ant-Man) star in The Vatican Tapes, a new horror film that will strike the fear into you this weekend. The film kicks off when a video from the Vatican is leaked, showing priests performing a violent exorcism on a young woman. The video shows the young woman going through the stages of exorcism as her family and priests try to save her. This is no ordinary exorcism, as the evil they are fighting is the most powerful they’ve ever encountered. It very well could be that this evil facing them is the Antichrist and it could threaten the safety of the whole world.
White Bird in a Blizzard
Shailene Woodley (Divergent) stars in White Bird in a Blizzard, based on the novel of the same name by Laura Kasischke. The film follows Kat Connors (Woodley) whose life is thrown into turmoil when her mother disappears. Kat has to come to grips with how deeply her mother’s disappearance has affected her. Returning home on a break from college, she finds herself confronted with the truth about her mother’s departure, and her own denial about the events surrounding it.
Everyman
BAFTA winner and Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) takes the title role in this dynamic new production of one of English drama’s oldest plays, directed by the National Theatre’s new Director Rufus Norris (Broken, London Road).Everyman is successful, popular and riding high when Death comes calling. He is forced to abandon the life he has built and embark on a last, frantic search to recruit a friend to speak in his defence.
