There have been a few creatures-from-the-deep films in recent times, with this year’s Crawl
and 47 Meters Down: Uncaged
reminding people why they should always be afraid to dip their toes in the water. But Underwater
takes a sci-fi spin on the phobia, following a group of scientists on a drilling expedition at the bottom of the ocean who awaken some mysterious sea monsters. Directed by William Eubank (who helmed the brilliant yet underrated The Signal
), the film also stars Kristen Stewart (Twilight
, Charlie’s Angles
), TJ Miller (Deadpool
), Vincent Cassel, John Gallagher Jr., and Jessica Henwick.
IT: Chapter 2
5 September 2019
Andrés Muschietti’s 2017 reboot of Stephen King’s It
wasn’t only a terrifying horror film, it was a genuinely great movie in its own right. The Argentine director is back to showcase part two of his re-invisioning of the demonic clown who plagues the small town of Derry. This time around, the film jumps ahead 20 years after the first movie, where the original characters – now grown and who have seemingly moved on with their lives – return to Derry to face off against Pennywise to try and put an end to his hold over them once and for all. James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa, and Jay Ryan join the cast, while Bill Skarsgård returns to take on the role of the shapeshifting clown.
Anything Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy
, Pacific Rim
, The Shape of Water
) touches is going to feature frightening or monstrous creatures and a compelling story, and that seems to be the case with Antlers
, which has received its first trailer. Del Toro is producer on the film, with Scott Cooper (Black Mass
) directing; with the film follows a small-town Oregon teacher (Keri Russell) and her brother (Jesse Plemons), the local sheriff, who discover that a young student (Jeremy T. Thomas) is harbouring a dangerous secret that places the entire town in danger. The script for Antlers
was adapted from short story from Nick Antosca, creator of horror anthology series Channel Zero
, although not much is known about Antlers other than the basic premise.
Release date: 30 October
IT Chapter 2 isn’t the only Stephen King adaptation arriving in 2019, as Doctor Sleep
makes its big-screen appearance in November. Acting as a follow-up to The Shining (which was released 39 years ago), the film follows Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor), the young psychic boy from the The Shining
, who is now in his midlife suffering from alcoholism. Coming from Mike Flanagan, the man behind Netflix’s Gerald’s Game
and The House on Haunted Hill
, There’s no doubt that this will be full of mind-bending and haunting moments.
