5 Movie Sequels Coming Your Way That You Didn’t Know About

BAd Boys 3

Which unexpected sequels should you buckle up for in the near future?

Sequels seem to be the name of the game in the film industry right now, but a few of them have gone under the radar and aren’t front page news, let’s have a look at a few of them coming your way in the near future.

Bad Boys 3

Release date: TBC

Martin Lawrence and Will Smith are icons of the 90s/00s period when it comes to action and comedy movies, and no movie franchise is more indicative of those two at the height of their game than the Bad Boys duology. It’s soon to become a trilogy – with both Lawrence and Smith reprising their roles, but it’s a little uncertain about whether or not this movie will resonate with audiences the way the first and second ones did. That said, Smith still holds tremendous star-power and should bring enough excitement and audience-interest to the project.

Indiana Jones 5

Release date: 2020

When the fifth entry in this longstanding series eventually releases (most likely in 2020) it means the franchise will have spanned four decades from the release of Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, all the way to 2020. More impressive than its longevity is the longevity of its prized star Harrison Ford, who will return for the fifth instalment alongside Steven Spielberg, who was recently confirmed to be returning to the director’s chair. One relatively obvious problem for an adventuring archeologist known for swinging between chasms and outrunning crashing boulders is that Harrison Ford is 75 – not exactly the age where one is in peak condition for artefact-stealing parkour moves. His age didn’t stop him from doing a decent amount of physical stunt-work in 2017’s Blade Runner 2049, though, but he probably won’t be the swash-buckling Indy of old. There are very few available details about the plot, so we’ll need to wait until it’s been under production for a while before we’ll get an idea about the story.

Edge of Tomorrow 2

Release date: TBC

2014’s Edge of Tomorrow was one of the most underrated films of its release-year, and one of the most well-executed sci-fi movies in recent times. Well, if you enjoyed the Groundhog Day-like war against an alien threat, you’ll be glad to know that a sequel is on the cards. Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, and director Doug Liman are all coming back, along with screenwriter Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying, Dora and the City of Gold) joining the team.

Bright 2

Release date: TBC

Netflix fantasy-action film Bright didn’t set the world alight from a critical point of view, but it’s world and setting was an interesting concept that is set to get a follow-up. The original followed Will Smith as a police officer who has to partner up with the  talented Joel Edgerton (as an orc) in an alternate Los Angeles where mythical creatures exist. Netflix has ordered the sequel, with David Ayer lined up to return as director, with Smith and Edgerton also said to be on the casting cards once again. With Netflix’s recent financial issues, nothing is certain, but the streaming service will need to focus on these big-name films to pull in the numbers.

World War Z 2

Release date: TBC

A follow-up to the 2013’s brilliant World War Z was planned even before the first film released. The original became the highest-grossing zombie movie in history, raking in more than $540 million at the worldwide box office. The sequel, seeing the return of star Brad Pitt, was set to begin production in June 2019 before it was suddenly stalled, with some budgets having to be reworked. However, it’s an extremely profitable franchise, and unlikely that the Paramount will let a sequel go unexplored.
