Just because you’re having a beer with the boys, doesn’t mean you have to hang out in a dingy dive. Even the manliest man enjoys a little bit of class and sophistication every now and then and Twankey Bar in Cape Town’s city centre is manly-sophistication personified. Whether you’re just enjoying a few drinks after work with your mates or want to impress a client, you can’t go wrong with this awesome spot. The MenStuff team went to check it out for ourselves this past week and we’ve got to say it really is top notch!

Located at The Taj Cape Town, the street-side bar is the perfect place to catch up over a few drinks with old friends. We went through on a Thursday evening, straight after work and loved the casual yet lively atmosphere of the place. We grabbed a table near the bar and were treated to live jazz music while we munched on a bowl of complimentary popcorn and sipped on craft beers and some of the best Mojitos in Cape Town. Sitting in the lively spot you can’t help but feel just a little more worldly and successful than you probably are. Leather seating, marble bar tops, and lots of dark wood finishes all come together to create an old school, 1920s cigar lounge-type of vibe. But, while at first glance, The Twankey Bar looks and seems like the kind of place that only high-powered businessmen would frequent, once you’re inside, the warm and friendly staff and the laid back vibe really make you feel like you belong.

Of course, visiting a fancy-pants spot like The Twankey Bar does also mean you’ll get to enjoy only the best food and drinks. Along with a great selection of local wines, the bar also offers a wide selection of speciality spirits such as whiskey, gin, and brandy.

The bar has also become well know for their great selection of local craft beers and ciders. Brands on offer including Devils Peak, Darling Brew, Jack Black Brewing Co, Robsons, Boston Breweries and Everson’s. With four beers available on-tap every day and an even wider range available by the bottle, there’s plenty to help you wet your whistle. Another must-try at Twankey Bar is a Mojito. The bar offers five different Mojito flavours including Rose & Hibiscus Mojito and a Pink Grapefruit Mojito. The Mojitos are all R50 each but if you go on Thursdays you get R10 off all Mojitos and trust me, they’re worth it!

As for the food, you can’t go wrong with having a light bite with your drinks. The all-day menu is available from noon to 22:00, Monday to Friday, and from 14:00 – 22:00 on Saturdays, and offers a few simple snack-type options, light meals, and sharing plates for those moments when you just need to snack on a little something.

The sharing plates include delights like Jalapeno Poppers (R75), Crispy Calamari (R85), and their famous Guacamole served chunky with corn chips – all perfect for sharing or eating all on your own. If it’s something more substantial you’re after then try the Beef Prego Roll with fries (R85) or Nachos with guacamole, cream cheese, and salsa (R75). If you’re really hungry then you’ll be glad to hear that the bar also serves main meals such as burgers and a selection of grills.

Wings and chips Twankey

We ordered a basket of Roasted Chicken Wings with sour cream and fries (R75) and the Southern Fried Chicken Fingers with fries (R75) and were pleasantly surprised with the portion sizes. The wings basket came with a good amount of wings and fries to snack on and definitely kept the hunger pangs at bay. The Chicken Fingers were also a real treat and are a must-order if you’re into deep fried snacks. Once again the Chicken Fingers came in a generous portion size and are served in a basket. I loved the food at this spot as its unpretentious and uncomplicated but still super delicious!
