3 New Games & Whether You Should Buy Them or Not

PUGB, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, & The Inpatient get our review rundown!

The 2018 gaming calendar has gotten off to a cracking start, and there are already a few games to consider picking up this month; so we’ve reviewed 3 standout titles to see if they’re worth a purchase, buying on sale, or giving a skip completely.

Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds

Available on: Xbox One | PC

What is it? One of the most surprising and unexpected games to dominate 2017, Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds is an every-man-for-himself battle royale shooter that picked up some serious momentum on Steam and has since made its jump to the Xbox One.

Is it any good? When it initially released, no. But game has gone through a few patches and tweaks since it’s launch, finally delivering a somewhat technically-sound experience. Bugs aside, you can’t help but to fall in love with the land-scavenge-survive gameplay loop that PUBG has brought to the table, mixing tactical realism and ridiculous absurdity in a way which somehow works. If you’re a bit tired of the Call of Duty and Battlefield franchises and looking for something different, PUBG is worth some playtime if you can deal with the rough edges.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Available on: PS4 | Xbox One | PC

What is it? A first-person, medieval adventure/combat game which throws players into a simulated, historically-accurate experience in the Holy Roman Empire.

Is it any good? Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a fun ride, with some overwhelmingly impressive attention to details; however, it’s not exactly the game it has been marketed to be. While the massive open-world, period-accurate armours and clothing, combat techniques, and real-world castles are all recreated beautifully, there is an exorbitant amount of dialogue and arguably mundane quests to complete throughout the game; not that there’s anything wrong with that, but if you’re a lover of stabbing things in the face, you may be left a itching for a bit more.

The Inpatient

Available on: PS4 |PS VR

What is it? Coming from the team behind Until Dawn and Hidden Agenda, The Inpatient is a first-person survival horror which sees players take on the role of a patient in a sanatorium who is suffering from some serious amnesia – great set-up for a mind-bending psychological breakdown, right?

Is it any good? The mystery of figuring out who you are and what you’re doing in a mental facility is an intriguing set-up, but the story gets a little convoluted as it progresses. To it’s credit, The Inpatient does feature some clever use of the VR tech, namely incorporating the symptoms of insanity through audio and visual tricks, while also utilising the motion controllers as a workable flashlight. It’s undoubtedly one of the better VR experiences available, but the value of its 3 hour game-time will have to be considered.
