Work dress codes have relaxed a lot in the last few years. While it’s great to feel more comfortable in your work clothes, it has also created some confusion about what is and is not suitable for work.

A semi-formal work look doesn’t mean sloppy jeans and a tee-shirt. So what is the happy medium? Think a tailored pair of trousers, chinos or even smart dark wash jeans with a tailored shirt and jacket.

To make this super easy, here is a list of must-haves to creating a slick semi-formal look:

Tailored trousers: This doesn’t have to be suit trousers. It can be a pair of chinos or even a pair of dark wash jeans. These days, it’s acceptable to wear a tailored jacket and shirt with a pair of jeans, but the fit is key. Avoid sloppy, baggy styles. Shop around to find your perfect fit.

Tailored shirts: Most men look better in a tailored shirt, no matter their build. Big baggy styles can make you look bigger than you are and a fit that is too tight will do the same. Look out for something in-between. If necessary, go to men’s stores who offer tailoring services to get the perfect fit. It’s worth it.

A smart jacket: This doesn’t have to be a suit jacket, but it does need to be smart. Depending on your personal style, it can be a jacket made of leather, tweed or suede. Even a classic blazer will work well. Make sure that your jacket works well with your trousers, shirts and jeans for maximum wear.

A classic pair of shoes: Your shoes can either make or break your look. The fashionable pointy shoe is great to elongate your leg and give you a slick look. If your professional image is more on the semi side of formal, you can consider a formal sneaker. Just make sure that they are clean and don’t pull your, otherwise slick look, down.
