Catch up with all the rugby happenings from the weekend
This weekend, the always-anticipated Super Rugby season kicked off. The Australian franchieses were tasked with getting the proceedings underway, and the men from down under didn’t disappoint to deliver some solid action.
Melbourne Rebels 30 – 23 Western Force
The Western Force came out firing in the opening round of Super Rugby 2013, and the Rebels were up to the task. The two teams exchanged big hits in the opening minutes, as well as putting on a great try-scoring display.
Mafi grabbed himself 2 for the force, while Robinson, Kingi and Pyle got themselves onto the to the try-scorers list for the Rebels, giving the Melbourne men the edge.
Queensland Reds 6 – 24 Brumbies
The 2011 Super Rugby champions just never showed up, as the Reds looked rather underwhelming in their season opener. The Brumbies, on the other hand, looked sharp and clinical, with Jake White’s behind-the-scenes work definitely showing through.
Brumbies fullback Jessie Mogg was a standout performer for the Canberra side.
Cell C Community Cup
The inaugural Cell C Community Cup got underway this weekend, and South Africa’s best clubs tested their mettle against one another.
The matches that took place exhibited the talent and high quality of club rugby within South Africa, and placed a high bar for the rest of the tournament to follow.
