May is upon us and delivers some exciting films that are sure to lure you back to the cinemas. From bloody franchise sequels to some sneaky horror films, here are the movies to catch this May:

Beast

Release date: 1 May 2026

If you’re looking for some sports-movie drama this May, Beast should deliver just that. It follows ex-con Patton James (Daniel MacPherson), who abandoned his mixed martial arts dream to support his wife, Luciana (Kelly Gale), and daughter. When Patton’s brother Malon suffers a serious injury in a fight to make good on his debts, Patton has to risk everything to get back in the ring to avenge him. Russell Crowe also stars, lending some gravitas to the whole story.

Normal

Release date: 1 May 2026

Since Nobody, Bob Odenkirk has had a resurgence as an action hero, and his latest film, Normal, continues that trend. Ulysses (Odenkirk) comes to the sleepy town of Normal, Minnesota, to serve as the temporary sheriff after the passing of the original sheriff. A bank robbery then leads Ulysses to find that a criminal underground network reaches throughout the entire town.

Mortal Kombat II

Release date: 8 May 2026

2021’s Mortal Kombat film reboot was a fresh, fun, and gory take on the beloved video game series, bringing a gritty and more visceral adaptation of the classic fighting franchise to the big-screen. The sequel delivers a bigger cast of characters, more Fatalities, and a bigger budget. One of the exciting announcements leading up to the filming was that Karl Urban (Dredd, The Boys) is playing fan-favourite character Johnny Cage, along with Shao Kahn making his appearance in the movie.

The Sheep Detectives

Release date: 8 May 2026

In this witty, new breed of mystery, George (Hugh Jackman) is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can’t possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realise they must become the detectives. As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep can be brilliant crime-solvers.

Obsession

Release date: 15 May 2026

After breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.

Fuze

Release date: 15 May 2026

If you’re a fan of Man on a Ledge and heist thrillers like that, you’ll want to check out Fuze. Set in contemporary London, the film picks up when an unexploded World War II bomb is unearthed at a busy construction site, forcing a massive citywide evacuation. Amid the escalating tension and chaos, a daring criminal operation is set in motion, one that uses the evacuation as cover for a meticulously planned heist.

Passenger

Release date: 22 May 2026

Passenger is one of those under-the-radar horror movies that might deliver something unique. It follows a young couple who witness an accident that leaves a driver dead. Soon, they’re being pursued by a demonic stalker who’s impossible to outrun and follows them wherever they go.

Backrooms

Release date: 29 May 2026

Inspired by some internet myths, Backrooms is an unsettling horror movie starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve. It follows a group of individuals who find a secret door in a furniture store that leads to a labyrinth of mysterious rooms.
