Watch: Bulls’ Khutha Mchunu Reveals Why Unshakeable Core Strength is a Prop’s Secret Weapon
Khutha Mchunu catches up with Cato to chat about his role as tight head prop at the Vodacom Bulls.
Vodacom Bulls tighthead prop Khutha Mchunu is one of the most experienced and versatile looseheads in South Africa, having played quite a lot of rugby for various franchises locally and abroad. The brilliant prop tells us everything we need to know about this daunting position as well as the blood, sweat, and tears that go into being the seasoned tighthead prop he is today.
Speaking to Cato Louw for ‘1 to 15: What rugby players actually do!’, the Vodacom Bulls prop explains, “my role in a rugby team is to provide stability at scrum time. “Your tighthead is your anchor to make sure the scrum doesn’t move.” Mchunu adds that, in the scrum, his next job is to “try and isolate the loose head from his hooker, so I have a much better chance of dominating him.”
While brute force and strength have a big part to play in this role, Mchunu reveals it’s actually core strength and stability he works on the most with Bulls Head of Strength and Conditioning, Andre Volsteedt. Bringing Volsteedt into the chat, the Bulls’ No. 3 reveals his astounding ability to hold a plank for 8 minutes!
Watch as Khutha Mchunu catches up with Cato to reveal how he trains and explain why props have the best banter in the team.
