5 Best Action-Comedies for Couples
When love and explosions meet, comedy happens. Here are our favourite couple-based action-comedies.
There’s something about watching the dynamic of a couple (whether married, dating, or estranged) go through an action-packed adventure together. Unusual scenarios tend to bring out the best (or worst) in people, and this is often why action-comedies are so alluring. To celebrate the upcoming release of Guns Up, hitting cinemas on 30 May, we’ve rounded up 5 of the best action-comedies featuring couples that you need to check out:
Fall Guy
Fall Guy is a bit of an unorthodox action-comedy, but one of the better ones in recent years. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt star in this zany meta-Hollywood take where Gosling plays a jaded stuntman who is forced to work on the set of a film being directed by his ex-wife. After the actual star of the film goes missing, Gosling’s character investigates to save his job, only to find that there’s a lot more at play with the disappearance. It’s really funny, the chemistry between Gosling and Blunt is fantastic, and the heavier dose of action is also appreciated.

Date Night
Date Night is one of the lesser-talked-about but equally hilarious action comedies of the 2010s. Starring the always fantastic Steve Carell and Tina Fey as a couple who, in the spur of the moment, hijack another reservation at a fancy restaurant in hopes of reigniting their marriage. But things take a turn for the worse, and the two end up trying to evade some dangerous individuals, which makes for an incredibly enjoyable circus of misfortunes.

Game Night
Game Night is one of those great comedies that doesn’t go for the outrageous and ribald to make you laugh. It’s all about normal people being stuck in an abnormal situation, and watching them react is the best thing about it. The film follows a few couples who schedule a game night, thinking they’re only going to play charades, although things go south due to a few mix-ups, and the couples end up in real-life shootouts, spy games, and interrogation scenarios, despite them thinking it’s still all part of the game. Leading the chaos are Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, who are fantastic throughout.

Knight and Day
One of Tom Cruise’s lesser-discussed films, Knight and Day, showcases that the veteran action star can play really well with another scene-stealing lead. Cameron Diaz joins Cruise in this action-romance adventure that sees him playing an eccentric secret agent on the run from the CIA, who pairs up with a classic car restorer (Diaz) despite her reluctance. Despite the light-hearted tone, there are some really solid action sequences in Knight and Day, and seeing Cruise have a bit more fun with the role is great to witness.

Murder Mystery
Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler have undeniable comedic chemistry, so it was a no-brainer to team them up for Netflix’s Murder Mystery. Essentially a funnier take on an Agatha Christie-like whodunnit, the film follows a married couple who are caught up in a murder investigation on a billionaire’s yacht. With Sandler’s character being a retired police officer, he decides to take it upon himself to find the killer. If you enjoy that somewhat goofy but endearing humour from Sandler’s other outings, you’ll enjoy this one.

What’s Next: Guns Up
Admittedly, we’ve been starved for some good action comedies lately, but thankfully, Kevin James’ Guns Up is en route to fill that void. The film follows Ray Hayes (James), an ex-cop and devoted husband and father who leads a dangerous double life as a mob henchman. On the brink of leaving “The Family” and making his dream of opening a diner with his wife Alice (Christina Ricci) a reality, his final job goes off the rails. With the clock ticking, Ray has one night to get his unsuspecting family out of the city before he gets snuffed out.
