‘Guns Up’ is Out Now! Here’s Our Review

Kevin James has become quite the chameleon in Hollywood. Initially hitting the big-time as the co-lead on the 90s sitcom, The King of Queens, James has since pivoted into more large-scale comedic endeavours alongside his pals Adam Sandler and Co. However, he has also flexed his acting chops and physical side in 2012’s Here Comes the Boom. As he’s gotten a little older and more grizzled, he’s definitely evolved with that demeanour, and his latest action-comedy Guns Up, doesn’t diverge too much from his usual formula, but offers a much more stoic and reserved take on the genre.
The story follows Ray, a former cop who turned to a life of debt-collecting on behalf of a criminal entity in order to make a little extra money for his family. When he wants out, things get a bit complicated and a rival gang comes after them, throwing their life into turmoil. James does a great job coming across as a broken-down and regretful father, who is doing what he needs to in order to make ends meet, but doing so reluctantly. He may not be known as one of those actors who can deliver a hard-boiled character, but he definitely has the look and energy to pull it off now, not to mention some impressive fight scenes.

James is flanked by Christina Ricci, who ends up playing a lot bigger role in the film than the initial marketing may suggest, and she does a great job to bring some heart and levity to the situation. Throw in Ray’s pre-teen son and teenage daughter, who also bring some ‘WTF energy’ to the film, and it makes for an interesting family dynamic that I think anyone can relate to.
Guns Up may not be the genre-breaking entry to shake up the industry, but it’s a really fun and interesting take that perfectly walks the line between action and comedy without being goofy or over-the-top. It’s got a dark edge to it, which is a welcome change to what we’ve seen from Kevin James in the past, and is a great outing for anyone who likes a dose of laughter with their guns and fisticuffs.
