There’s no denying that South Africans have quite the sweet tooth, so it’s no surprise that sugar-free variants of the country’s most popular carbonated drinks are such a hit across the country, most notably that of Coke No Sugar (formerly Coke Zero) and Pepsi Max. However, when it comes to which drink comes out on top, which drink do South Africans prefer?

Like Godzilla vs. Kong, the debate of which is best is quite the fiery one, but according to recent taste tests done across SA’s major cities, Pepsi Max has come out as the winner.

Blind taste tests were set up across Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town in public spots, with the two well-known sugar-free versions of the beloved brands. The findings were as follows:

·       Out of 3,300 participants in Joburg, 65% preferred Pepsi Max

·       Out of 1,480 participants in Durban, 72% preferred Pepsi Max

·       Out of 2,231 participants, 65% preferred Pepsi Max

·       And out of 1,365 participants in Pretoria, 66% preferred Pepsi Max

Participants took part in the Pepsi Max Taste Challenge across seven different sites in the above major cities over the weekend of 24 and 25 September 2022 and 1st and 2nd of October 2022.

Supervisors were on-site throughout the weekends to ensure all variables were controlled. For example, the temperature of both zero-sugar colas always remained equal.
