Chiefs Cheetahs

The Chiefs demolished the Cheetahs 45-3 in a utterly convincing performance in Hamilton.

The match saw the 2012 champions continue their winning-run in this year’s tournament, going from a 10-3 half-time lead to running the visitors ragged in the second-half.

While Goosen and Anscombe exchanged penalties, the first try came only in the 24th minute, when Chiefs captain Liam Messam crashed over in the corner. Anscombe successfully converted, making it 10-3 to the hosts.

The Chiefs struggled for possession throughout the first-half, but something must’ve been said in the change-rooms, as the second-half saw a dominant ball-retaining Chiefs team return to the field.

Ben Afeaki scored in the corner after he picked up loose ball following a charge down from Brodie Retallick. Anscombe nailed the conversion from the sideline.

After some good build up between the backs and forwards, Masaga crossed over to add another 5-pointer to the Chiefs’ scoreline; Anscombe added the extras.

Aaron Cruden’s performance was flawless, as he orchestrated a phenomenal backline move which put Anscombe through a gap which allowed him to race away to tryline.

Young hooker Rhys Marshall reacted quickly and grabbed a try of his own, picking and driving from 2m out.

Another try was added to the front row, as Ben Tameifuna barged his way over the line from a ruck.

Anscombe’s kicking was fantastic, and never missed a shot, giving the home team the extra points to always keep the momentum going.

Player of the match: Gareth Anscombe – while Cruden didn’t put a foot wrong, Anscombe has to be commended for his great kicking and attacking performance.
