A new milestone in mobile technology has arrived; it’s time to enter the tri-fold smartphone era. Huawei has officially announced the launch of the Huawei Mate XT | Ultimate Design in South Africa. The world’s first tri-fold smartphone, the Huawei Mate XT has been launched alongside the Huawei Mate X6 foldable smartphone.

With the Mate XT’s massive 10.2-inch tablet-sized display that folds seamlessly into a pocket-friendly smartphone, this inventive tri-fold device is set to redefine the way South Africans work, play, and stay connected.

Triple the fun with the Mate XT

You may think a tri-fold smartphone would be quite bulky, but astonishingly, the Mate XT remains only slightly thicker than a regular smartphone, even with all three folds stacked together. When fully unfolded, the device becomes the thinnest foldable in the world, measuring just 3.6mm. According to Huawei, the design is the result of a slew of innovations, including the ultra-thin leather on the back, which adds a touch of subtle luxury. Each device also features the Eonic Curves design on the camera lens module, where each lens is crafted over 22 days and put through 78 complex processes, making every lens module unique and one-of-a-kind.

The Huawei Mate XT also introduces Huawei’s 3K Huawei X-True Display. With its ‘Multiview in One’ experience, the device redefines what a smartphone display can do, supporting seamless transitions between single, dual, and triple-screen modes. This flexibility lets users enjoy an all-in-one device that functions as a smartphone and tablet, while also dipping its toe into the realm of laptop functionality.

Cameras are where many foldables make compromises. But, Huawei says its Mate XT pioneers a 10-step adjustable physical aperture in its extremely thin and light body to counter this. The Huawei Xmage camera system covers ultra-wide angles to 5.5x telephoto, making it easy to capture both close-up details and faraway subjects. The Ultra Speed Snapshot feature ensures fast-moving subjects are captured with stunning clarity.

The genius behind the Mate XT’s tri-fold design lies in its advanced hinge system; an engineering breakthrough that makes this smartphone a reality. Not only does it fold and unfold smoothly with effortless precision, but it also manages to fold inward and outward while maintaining its slim profile. To guarantee long-term durability, Huawei says it has engineered the folding mechanism with ultra-high strength steel, ensuring it withstands continuous, frequent use without compromising reliability.

One-fold, dual-screen with the Mate X6

Looking for a one-fold, dual-screen experience? Launched alongside the Mate XT, the Huawei Mate X6 promises to bring a new level of durability and sophistication to the foldable smartphone category. Incredibly thin at just 9.85mm when folded and 4.6mm when unfolded, the Mate X6 features dual OLED displays, aerospace-grade aluminium framing, and reinforced Kunlun Glass, offering a 25-times improvement in drop resistance. Its multi-dimensional hinge and carbon fibre-backed inner screen ensure both strength and a smooth, seamless folding experience.

Designed for performance and clarity, the Mate X6 is equipped with Huawei’s Ultra Chroma Camera system, including a 50MP primary lens with a ten-stop adjustable aperture and a colour-accuracy system enhanced by 1.5 million spectral channels. The device supports multitasking with up to three apps running simultaneously and features Huawei X-True Display technology with adaptive refresh rates, the Mate X6 is as much about everyday practicality as it is about premium craftsmanship.

Step into the future with foldable smartphones

Huawei says its new Mate XT isn’t just a smartphone, it’s the beginning of a new era in mobile technology. With its groundbreaking tri-fold design, Huawei says it hopes to challenge the very definition of what a smartphone can be, setting the stage for a future where one device seamlessly replaces multiple gadgets. The way we work, play, and connect is about to change forever.
