The April cinema slate is jam-packed with arguably the most diverse genres for movie-lovers to enjoy, with everything from horror and crime to comedy and action on the cards. We’ve rounded up the most-anticipated releases arriving in April 2024, below:
Monkey Man
Release date: 5 April 2024
There have been a lot of revenge-fueled action movies since John Wick reinvigorated the genre ten years ago, but one of the more interesting-looking genre entries on the way is that of Monkey Man. Oscar nominee Dev Patel (Lion, Slumdog Millionaire) makes his directorial debut and stars in this thriller about one man’s quest for vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systemically victimise the poor and powerless.
The First Omen
Release date: 5 April 2024
The long-running horror franchise is back with this prequel to 1976’s The Omen. The film stars Nell Tiger Free, Tawfeek Barhom, Sônia Braga, Ralph Ineson, and Bill Nighy; and follows an American woman sent to work at a church in Rome who uncovers a sinister conspiracy to bring about the birth of the Antichrist. Spooky.
Civil War
Release date: 12 April 2024
Coming from Ex Machina and Annihilation director Alex Garland, Civil War is a dystopian thriller set in a USA that has fallen into a full-blown civil conflict between two opposing sides. Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man) stars as a journalist chronicling the horrors of war which are playing out in her home nation.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
Release date: 12 April 2024
The next entry into the soft-reboot/sequel Ghostbusters franchise, Frozen Empire shifts the action to New York City where the young Ghostbusters recruits take their new vocation to another level when the discovery of an ancient artefact unleashes an evil force. Ghostbusters new and old must unite to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age. The cast once again includes Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, and Finn Wolfhard, who are accompanied by the OG ‘busters of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson.
Abigail
Release date: 19 April 2024
Starring Giancarlo Esposito, Kathryn Newton, and Alisha Weir, Abigail is an interesting twist on the vampire genre. After a group of criminals kidnap the ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, they retreat to an isolated mansion, unaware that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl.
Sleeping Dogs
Release date: 19 April 2024
The Australian stallion Russell Crowe is back in the crime thriller Sleeping Dogs, based on the novel by E.O. Chirovici, The Book of Mirrors. Suffering from memory loss, a former homicide detective (Crowe) tries to solve a brutal murder that he can’t recall. As he pieces together evidence from a decade-old investigation, he soon uncovers a sinister web of buried secrets tied to his forgotten past.
Boy Kills World
Release date: 26 April 2024
Filmed in South Africa (go, us!), Boy Kills World is an adaptation of the beloved comic book which follows a deaf protagonist (played by Bill Skarsgård) who is trained to be a ruthless killer after his family is murdered. While there isn’t much dialogue from the hero, Boy, viewers will get insight into his thoughts as veteran voice actor H. Jon Benjamin (Bob’s Burgers) provides Boy’s inner thoughts throughout the movie.
The Fall Guy
Release date: 26 April 2024
Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt star in this zany meta-Hollywood take where Gosling plays a jaded stuntman who is forced to work on the set of a film being directed by his ex-wife. After the star of the film goes missing, Gosling’s character investigates to save his job, only to find that there’s a lot more at play with the disappearance.
