There’s a host of huge sporting encounters going down this weekend; but which ones should you keep on your radar? We’ve got your handy weekend sports guide right here:
Wallabies v Barbarians
It’s an early one, but any Barbarians fixture is worth getting up for. The Wallabies, riding high off the victory over the All Blacks a week ago, will be in fine form for the encounter. That said, the Barbarians epitomise unpredictability, and with the likes of Quade Cooper, Taqele Naiyaravoro, Tim Nanai-Williams, and All Blacks George Moala and Augustine Pulu in their backline, anything is possible.
Predicted result: Barbarians by 5. You can bet on the game here.
Sharks v Western Province
The Currie Cup final is here, and looking at the season as a whole, the Sharks look to have everything in their favour: a home final, the sending off of veteran players, and the overall best results of the year. On the other hand, Western Province have been going from strength to strength in recent games, toppling the Lions a fortnight ago in a grindy, but spirited performance, so the Cape side are set to put up a very good fight in Durban. It’s a tough one to call, but given the aura surrounding the Sharks at the moment, it’s hard not to back them for the win.
Predicted result: Sharks by 5. You can bet on the game here.
Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur
Manchester United and Spurs sit on equal points in 2nd and 3rd on the log respectively, so there’s a lot of incentive for both teams to get the victory. Spurs put an emphatic performance together against Liverpool last weekend so United will have to expect a confident team going to the Theatre of Dreams. Both sides have solid defences though, so goals are likely to be few and far between, but with Harry Kane’s prolific form at the moment, it’ll have to be United’s defence that are fully focused if they’re going to keep the Englishman quiet.
Predicted result: Manchester United 1 – 1 Tottenham Hotspur. You can bet on the game here.
Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona (La Liga)
Athletic Bilbao have a reputation for being a tough, hard working side that can take a lot of attacking pressure without breaking down. They’ve had some fiery matches with Barcelona in recent history, the best likely being the 2015 Copa Del Rey final where Messi scored one of the best solo goals of his career. Barcelona sit at the top of La Liga with a four point gap between them and closest rivals Valencia, but they’ll be looking over their shoulders as both Valencia and third place Real Madrid have been edging closer in recent weeks. Their star signing from the summer, Ousmane Dembele, is out for the year, so a lot of responsibility will fall on Messi’s shoulders to get them the three points.
Predicted result: Athletic Bilbao 1 – 2 Barcelona. You can bet on the game here.
Bayern Munich v RB Leipzig (Bundesliga)
This Bundesliga fixture is a parallel to the Premier League fixture between United and Spurs, as it sees second play third in a log-shuffling battle. Bayern sit in second place on 20 points – tied with Dortmund for top spot, while Leipzig are just one point poorer. The two teams met in the DFB Cup on Wednesday and played out a 1-1 draw that Bayern won 5-4 on penalties, so clearly the sides are evenly matched. Bayern needed a late equaliser to take the game to penalties, though, so Leipzig will likely feel as though they can get the better of Bayern at the weekend, which could see them leading the Bundesliga log by the end of the weekend depending on how Dortmund manage in their fixture.
Predicted result: Bayern Munich 2 – 1 RB Leipzig. You can bet on the game here.
