Borussia Dortmund are well-known for their uncompromising dedication to attacking football, which often comes at the expense of a sound defensive record. This weekend’s grudge match played against Schalke 04 exhibited all the best, and worst, characteristics of their playing style as the tense match ended in a 4-4 draw – an almost unheard of result.
Somehow, Dortmund got themselves to a rapid 4-0 lead within 25 minutes, with their final goal being their best – a fantastic half volley from inside the box after a few scrappy conversions before that.
But in the second half they suffered an absolute collapse, worsened by Aubameyang’s sending-off in the 72nd minute as Schalke fought back to a 4-4 score line in what is probably one of the most dramatic derby matches in Europe’s top leagues in some time.
Dortmund desperately needed a win from this match as they’ve managed to get just a single point from their last five Bundesliga matches, but now that record is now only two points from six matches and leaves Dortmund in a precarious position as their downward spiral continues.
