This weekend sees the return of some high-noon Western attitude, a likely-doomed venture into the woods, and a cyber-crime thriller. Here’s our picks for the movies releasing Friday, 23 September 2016:
The Magnificent Seven
Friday, 23 September
Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, and Ethan Hawke lead an all-star cast in this action-packed remake. An Old West town is besieged by industrialist, Bartholomew Bogue, forcing the desperate residents to hire the services of seven gun men, headed by bounty hunter, Sam Chisolm. The ragtag outlaws set about preparing for a violent altercation with savage thieves during which time they find themselves fighting for much more than just money.
We had the chance to see The Magnificent Seven early, and (spoiler alert) we loved it, with MenStuff’s Jeremy calling it “an endearing shot to the heart of Hollywood nostalgia”. Read our full review here.
Initially titled The Woods (as a secret faux name during filming), this new horror instalment is a direct sequel to 1999’s cult classic The Blair Witch Project. The film picks up a couple years after the original when a group of college students venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James’ sister Heather in 1994, who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch.
No, this isn’t the remake of the 1990 clown horror (that’s coming in 2017), but is a thriller about cyber crime and its effect on those involved. Pierce Brosnan stars as Mike Reagan, who has everything he could ever want, a beautiful family and a top of the line smart house. The company he owns is on the verge of changing flight leasing forever. That is, until the relationship with his closest advisor turns nasty, to the point where his teenage daughter is being stalked and his family is under attack through every technological facet of their lives.
