With Disney’s acquisition of Fox (who owned the rights to the X-Men film rights for the past 20-odd years), it’s a no-brainer that Marvel will look to reboot and reinvigorate their iconic mutant creations now that the property is back with its original creators.

How exactly they do that, and how they incorporate it into the existing Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is the questions; however, according to rumours, Marvel is eventually planning to pit the Avengers against the X-Men in a massive milestone movie.

A storyline which would play out in an admittedly tantalising Avengers vs. X-Men film would be quite an organic one, as the two superhero teams have butted heads in a 2012 crossover comic series.

The news of the rumoured crossover comes from multiple sources, so take it with a pinch of salt, but it does match some of the things that we’ve heard in the past. As per the report, Doctor Doom will gradually play a larger and larger role in the MCU, one which will eventually culminate in the MCU’s adaptation of Secret Wars, which the studio is said to be in the early stages of developing. The arc will then shift to introduce Magento as a primary villain, culminating in Earth’s Mightiest Heroes having to battle Xavier’s gifted individuals.

While Avengers; Endgame appeared to be the culmination of Marvel’s biggest properties, a potential Avengers vs. X-Men film could eclipse it given the scale and fandom around the two franchises, which would mean big numbers at the box-office for Marvel.
