This week at the cinema sees the return of interplanetary adventures, frightening creature-features, and a bald-headed assassin of a different kind. Here’s our picks for the movies releasing Friday, 26 August 2016:
Star Trek: Beyond
The next instalment in the rebooted Star Trek franchise is looking pretty damn good. Star Trek: Beyond sees the USS Enterprise crew attacked by an unknown alien force and marooned on a hostile planet. Chris Pine, Karl Urban, John Cho, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana return, with Idris Elba joining the cast as a mysterious new villain. Fast and Furious 5 and 6 director Justin Lin takes over the directing responsibilities while JJ Abrams focuses on the Star Wars: Episode VIII.
Harking back to classic films like Jaws and survival stories like 127 Hrs, The Shallows is a new psychological thriller which stars Blake Lively, and one really big shark. The film follows Nancy (Lively) who, while surfing on a secluded beach, finds herself on the feeding ground of a great white shark. Though she is stranded only 200 yards from shore, survival proves to be the ultimate test of wills, requiring all of Nancy’s ingenuity, resourcefulness and fortitude.
The Mechanic: Resurrection
Jason Statham returns as Arthur Bishop, the world’s most dangerous hitman, in the sequel to the massively underrated 2011 action romp. In this follow-up, Bishop is ready to retire his status as a contract killer and put his murderous past behind him. Just as he’s ready to kick off his boots, the love of his life is kidnapped by his most formidable foe, forcing him to carry out three impossible assassinations and make them look like accidents.
