Twankey Bar’s Epic Cocktail Menu Rivals Anything in Town [Review]

With intriguing cocktail-making methods, like teapot brewing, and every ingredient being made fresh on the premises, this new cocktail menu is a cut above the rest.

The Twankey Bar at Taj Cape Town has been reinvented and is officially ready for a new era! One of the inner city’s most iconic bars, The Twankey Bar’s new look is strongly influenced by prohibition America, where sipping cocktails was a luxury and innovation was used to make the most of the ingredients on offer. And, with the new vibe comes a bold new cocktail menu that is sure to dazzle and delight. Spearheaded by Cape Town award-winning Mixologist, AJ Snetler, the new cocktail menu offers intriguing cocktail-making methods coupled with bold flavours that are unlike anything else in Cape Town.

Kaya Onaran, Food and Beverage Director at Taj Cape Town says AJ was able to bring something completely new to the bar. “His incredible gift and passion has meant our new offering is highly curated, with an ever-changing cocktail menu featuring the freshest and most exciting ingredients the Western Cape has to offer,” said Onaran.


The new cocktail offerings will see guests sipping on cocktails made using intriguing cocktail-making methods (from wood-chip smoking and blazing to teapot brewing) as well as a long list of ingredients made fresh on the premises. And when they say everything is made fresh they mean it – every infusion, syrup and garnish is made from scratch on the premises and it’s evident from the very first sip that you’re trying something oh-so-special. If you’re not sure what to try I’d suggest Ting Lings Tea Cup (R85). This drink will knock your socks off and is a delightfully potent concoction packed with flavour. For something a little more sweet and subtle try the Bubbles & Suds (R85) cocktail.


But it’s not all about the drinks, the food menu has been updated too and as Onaran points out the deep traditions of the Spice Route are evident in the food menu. “The food is an eclectic melange of carefully created tapas-styled dishes. It features refined versions of Indian street snacks as well as local and international influences in dishes like the Asian salmon tataki, the spiced lamb and blue cheese croquettes and fish and chip sliders.” Other must-try delights include the Rock Prawn Tempura with Red Chilli Bean ‘Tobanjan’ Mayo (R110) and the Crumbed Brie with Onion & Red Currant Marmalade (R75).


I got the chance to try a wide selection of the new menu and loved the laid-back style of the dishes on offer. Some of my favourites from the menu include Thai Spiced Tray Pizza with Mushrooms (a crunchy, flat-bread take on a classic pizza – R65) the Classic Guacamole with Corn Tortillas (a delightful snack to share – R75), and the Bacon Poppers – a slightly different take on traditional Mexica chilli poppers – R75).

As AJ explains, his vision for the bar is based on an intuitive, personalised style that will keep customers coming back time and time again. “A good barman is able to read a patron’s mood and serve a drink which will perfectly suit the occasion,” says AJ. “We are all about a unique, exceptional experiences. Our barmen have been hand-picked and trained in the art of cocktail making. We see ourselves as an academy that will be sending highly skilled bar-people out into the world when they are ready!”
