Review wolfenstein lego marvel superheroes hidden agenda

Nazi-robots, spandex-clad blocks, & sneaky suspicions.

2017 is coming to a screeching halt soon, but before we wrap up the year of gaming that was, we’ve given our verdict on some of the biggest games that have hit store shelves in recent weeks.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Available on: Xbox One | PS4 | PC

Is it any good? The Wolfenstein franchise has a special place in gamer’s hearts — known as the no-frills, brutal shooter that strips away the BS and delivers a solid, blockbuster package; and we’re happy to report that The New Colossus is that Wolfenstein of old, and so much more. The New Colossus picks up after the events of 2014’s brilliant yet under-appreciated The New Order, as the player once again jumps into the Nazi-blood-stained boots of BJ Blazkowicz as he wakes up from a coma to find the good ole US of A under full Nazi occupation. Not ideal. He has to (once again) take up arms against those pesky Swastika-donning extremists, but of course, you have a whole lot of bonkers guns to help you with the job at hand. The alternate timeline premise dabbles in the bizarre grey area between fact and fiction, making for an interesting journey moving from robo-Nazi-dogs to some truly heartfelt moments that add some gravity to the story. Thankfully, Wolfenstein II‘s gunplay is as robust as ever, offering a more weighty, punchy feel to the combat, leaving you feeling the damage you’re doing to your enemies, rather than the impression that you’re shooting paper targets.

Should I buy it? Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is every bit the challenging, over-indulgent Nazi-shooter you want it to be, but it’s also not as brash and blunt as it initially looks, providing a relatable, human story alongside its spray of bullets and blood. A must-play for first-person shooter fans.

Lego Marvel Superheroes 2

Available on: Xbox One | PS4 | PC | Switch

Is it any good? The Lego games are always fantastic, and the latest sequel to 2013’s Lego Marvel Superheroes spin-off, is no exception. The sequel expands upon the previous game with a new open world, new characters, and scenarios and influences from recent Marvel movies over the past few years, but still maintains the winning-formula of the franchise — jumping, smashing blocks, solving puzzles, and beating up baddies. The game also introduces a new four-player competitive super hero battling mode, allowing players to fight each other cooperatively in battle arenas.

Should I buy it? If you’ve played previous Lego games, you know what you’re getting here — there’s nothing fundamentally different. But Marvel and Lego fans alike will find a lot of pleasing fan-fare with Lego Marvel Superheroes 2.

Hidden Agenda

Available on: PS4

Is it any good? Hidden Agenda is an intriguing concept that flips the often colourful, simplistic party game format on its head, turning into a competitive, dark murder-case of deceit and manipulation. Players connect to the PS4 using their smartphones and the accompanying PlayLink app, and play through a narrative-driven game not unlike that of Until Dawn or Heavy Rain; but the catch is that each player can steer the story to his or her agenda, hence the name. Want to steer the story towards a particular suspect? You could make key decisions that lead to that. Want to put someone behind bars you have a vendetta against? Find the route that makes that happen. Each player has hidden agenda cards (power-ups that override other players’ decisions, if you will) that they can use to try and achieve their hidden agendas in each chapter, and the other players have an opportunity to guess what those are — giving an element of bragging rights between you and your friends.

Should I buy it? It’s one of (if not the) most original games to come out in 2017, and a perfect title to sit down and enjoy with a non-gamer or hardcore gaming enthusiast. It’s a little short, but a great taste of what can be achieved using PlayLink.
