7 Great Games You Should Consider Buying on Black Friday

rise-of-the-tomb-raider-main

Now’s the time to pick up one or more of these amazing Xbox One, PS4, and PC titles.

Black Friday is here, people! And yeah, while we know it’s a somewhat over-inflated, fiasco of consumerism, it is a good opportunity to score on some decent deals. We’ve rounded up some of 2017 and yesteryear’s best games that you should consider when doing your Black Friday shopping:

Mass Effect: Andromeda

Available on: Xbox One, PC, PS4

Yeah, Mass Effect: Andromeda had some bad press around its somewhat strange facial animations, but that aside, it’s actually an incredibly solid game and great entry in the Mass Effect series. New toys, from a jetpack to a rock-climbing off-roading vehicle, Andromeda will keep you glued to your seat for weeks. Improvements, including more fluid movement and combat, is a refreshing boost in pace, along with the ability to assign skills to any type of playstyle, rather than having to pick a class from the get-go.

The Evil Within 2

Available on: Xbox One, PC, PS4

The Evil Within was a surprise hit when it released in 2014, and the follow-up expands on the somewhat linear, survival-horror formula by throwing players into bigger environments and trickier enemies, while refining the stuff controls from the first game. The story, as is with most of Mikami’s games, is a bit all over the place, but does manage to come together when things start wrapping up. For fans of Resident Evil 4, Dead Space or The Last of Us, this is a great addition to your nightmare fuel.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Available on: PS4

If you’ve been following the gaming landscape this year, even a little bit, you would’ve been sure to hear of Horizon: Zero Dawn. From the outset, the first few minutes of this PS4 exclusive oozes triple-A pedigree – from the visuals, presentation, and snappy controls – it all looks and feels immaculate, and coming from the team behind the acclaimed Killzone series, we’d expect that. But Guerrilla Games have taken things a step further and delivered an experience that’s unique and different, but one that relies on the best bits of other games in the genre to create something spectacular. It’s a gorgeous visual romp through a post-apocalyptic Earth with gameplay that’s addictive yet challenging, which can be put alongside the likes of God of War 3The Last of Us, and the Uncharted series.

FIFA 18

Available on: Xbox One, PC, PS4

If you’ve been deliberating about buying FIFA 18 for over a month now, now is the time to buy it, because before you know it, FIFA 19 will be out. We have to admit too, we were becoming skeptical of EA’s annual footie franchise (the changes just didn’t seem to warrant the purchase), but FIFA 18 has left us genuinely impressed. The new gameplay tweaks result in a much more realistic and difficult game, which is exactly what FIFA needed. The story mode is enjoyable albeit a bit predictable, but rating FIFA on its story mode is like critiquing a salad for having average bacon — the fact it even has bacon is a win in itself.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

Available on: PS4

While it may initially appear it, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is anything but an expansion/DLC for Uncharted 4. This is a fully-fledged Uncharted game, and not to mention one of the best of the bunch, and that’s saying a lot. That said, there’s no denying that a little something is missing with the absence of series protagonist, Nathan Drake, but the new heroines and expanded ideas do confirm that there’s life in the Uncharted series, full of climbing, gunfights, emotional story beats, and high-octane action.

Gears of War 4

Available on: Xbox One, PC

While it’s one of the biggest franchise names around, there’s no denying the feeling that Gears of War 4 came and went without getting too much attention, which is a travesty as it’s one of the most solid third-person shooters this generation. Gears of War 4 reminds us exactly what made Gears so damn likeable in the first place. It doesn’t diverge too far away from the cover-shooter formula, but does introduce new gameplay twists thanks to some great environmental changes and snazzy guns that mix up the chainsawing carnage.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

Available on: PS4, Xbox One

Rise of the Tomb Raider is one of, if not the, best entry in the Tomb Raider series ever. The sequel expands upon 2013’s reboot, and introduces crafting and survival techniques to take the experience to new heights, and the ever-evolving story of a young and ambitious Lara Croft is impossible to not be caught up in. The 20 Year Celebration edition on PS4 also features two previously-unreleased segments, Blood Ties, which takes place in Croft Manor, and Lara’s Nightmare, a zombie mode of sorts, which throws you into an onslaught of creatures as you try and survive.
