Marvel’s Spider-Man

Release date: 7 September 2018

The Batman Arkham series set a new benchmark for superhero video games, and since its release, fans of other franchise have continually asked: “Why can’t they use that model for [insert your favourite superhero here]?”. Well, Spidey fans will be glad to hear that New York’s infamous wall-crawler is getting similar treatment from Insomniac Games (known for the Ratchet and Clank franchise) and looks to be open-world superhero nirvana. The slick combat system, sprawling explorable environment, and massive set-piece boss fights will make Spider-Man a serious contender for undisputed super hero game champion when it hits the PS4 in a couple of months.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Release date: 26 October 2018

It may not seem like it, but it’s been a whole 8 years since the original Red Dead Redemption came out on Xbox 360 and PS3 all the way back in 2010 – and diehard fans have been crying out for a sequel for a few years. The first game managed to deliver a combination of incredible open-world immersion as well as an engaging story. The sequel will have all the power of current-gen consoles to harness, and looks like it’s going to expand the scope of the original quite significantly. Whether you’re keen to dive headfirst into the compelling narrative or hunt HD armadillos with a Remington again – RDR2 will have you covered!

Kingdom Hearts 3

Release date: 29 January 2019

Kingdom Hearts 3 has effectively been the video game version of Schrodingers Cat – in many people’s eyes, it’s been both dead and alive until people actually see it on store shelves. Mercifully, that release confirmation came at E3 2018 – with the game now (holding thumbs) slated  to arrive in January 2019. Sora and his pals are getting back together to find some resolution to the garbled conundrum that Kingdom Hearts’ story has evolved into, but for established fans, it’s a piece of much-needed closure to a beloved action-RPG series. Despite the long delays in release, the final product should be a seminal piece of video gaming history, but hopefully all the delays haven’t resulted in fans moving past the franchise. I mean – who can turn down teaming up with the Buzz Lightyear and Woody?
