The first week of October has already gotten off to a bang with some big game releases, but things are just getting warmed up, as some more heavy-hitters come our way this week including some franchise spin-offs, expansions, and RPGs heading our way.
Here are our picks for the biggest games launching the week:
Minecraft: Story Mode – Episode 1: The Order of the Stone
Digital Release date: 13 October (Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4, PC, PS Vita, Android, iOS) – Pre-order the physical edition on Raru.co.za
If you thought Minecraft was fun but lacked a little bit of narrative direction, you’ll be pretty excited for Minecraft: Story Mode. The upcoming game is an all-new narrative-driven game series developed by Telltale (The Walking Dead, Tales from the Borderlands) in collaboration with Mojang. Set in the world of Minecraft, the series will feature an original story, driven by player choice. This looks pretty interesting, and with the voice talents of Patton Oswalt, Ashley Johnson, and Catherine Taber on-board, this is building up to be a real blockbuster.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Hearts of Stone
Release date: 13 October (PS4, Xbox One, PC) – Buy on Raru.co.za
If you’ve managed to make your way through the mindbogglingly impressive Witcher 3 already, the first expansion for the game releases this week. Adding over 10 hours of new gameplay, new characters, powerful monsters, unique romance and a brand new storyline shaped by your choices, Hearts of Stone is set to give Geralt of Rivia a whole new set of challenges as he tries to hunt down a ruthless bandit captain, Olgierd von Everec, a man who possesses the power of immortality.
Grand Ages: Medieval
Release date: 13 October (PS4, PC) – Buy on Raru.co.za
Grand Ages: Medieval starts off with players taking control of a small European settlement and from there they’ll have to increase their power and wealth by means of war, trade, political intrigue and more before turning their attentions to over 20km of European territory. The game will also include an 8 player multiplayer, which will allow players to set commands for when they step away from the game.
Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut
Release date: 13 October (PS4, Xbox One, PC. Mac)
Wasteland 2 Director’s Cut, originally announced as the Game of the Year Edition, is releasing this week, and features the full game of inXile’s hit post-apocalyptic RPG, but with a whole bunch of overhauled features. Quirks, perks, precision strikes, expanded voice acting, and balance changes are all on the menu, and it will also be given an extensive visual upgrade thanks to a move to the Unity 5 engine. Also, anyone who currently owns Wasteland 2 will get the Director’s Cut on PC, Mac and Linux for free.
Dragon Quest Heroes
Release date: October 13 (PS4) – Buy on Raru.co.za
Dragon Quest Heroes mixes the Dragon Quest series with the hack-n-slash style of the Dynasty Warriors games. This action-oriented adventure brings together a large number of characters from the Dragon Quest series like Yangus, Maya, Alena, Bianca, and more. Players can level up every character in the game with unique spells and abilities, and gather monster medals from defeated enemies to utilise them as allies in battle. Much like Hyrule Warriors, this action-oriented take on a beloved series works surprisingly well.
