5 Big Movies Releasing In SA This Weekend

We check out what big-screen adventures are landing in South African cinemas this weekend.

The weekend is here and we’ve got some big movie releases hitting local cinemas this weekend, including a hilarious action comedy, a star-studded classic retelling of Peter Pan, an edge-of-you-seat crime thriller, and the return of Mr. Toby Maguire.

Check out our picks for the movies releasing Friday, 9 October 2015:

American Ultra

American Ultra is a fast-paced action comedy about Mike (Jesse Eisenberg), a seemingly hapless and unmotivated stoner whose small-town life with his live-in girlfriend, Phoebe (played by Twilight’s Kristen Stewart), is suddenly turned upside down. Unbeknownst to him, Mike is actually a highly trained, lethal sleeper CIA agent. In the blink of an eye, as his secret past comes back to haunt him, Mike is thrust into the middle of a deadly government operation and is forced to summon his inner action-hero in order to survive.

Pan

Pan follows the beginnings of the beloved characters created by J.M. Barrie who live in Neverland. Hugh Jackman steps out of the shadow of Wolverine to play Blackbeard, with Rooney Mara playing Tiger Lilly. The cast also includes Levi Miller as Peter Pan, Garrett Hedlund, Amanda Seyfried and Adeel Akhta. It’s full of big special effects, great set-pieces, and a bit of humour thrown into the mix.

Pawn sacrifice

Liev Schreiber and Toby Maguire star in this gripping true story set during the height of the Cold War. It follows American chess prodigy Bobby Fischer who finds himself caught between two superpowers when he challenges the Soviet Empire. The film chronicles Fischer’s terrifying struggles with genius and madness, and the rise and fall of a kid from Brooklyn who captured the imagination of the world.

Life

Robert Pattinson, Lauren Gallagher, and Peter Lucas, star in Life – a film that chronicles the story behind the 1955 LIFE magazine photo thread by Dennis Stock of then-rising star, James Dean, and gives us an inside look at some of Hollywood’s most iconic images and into the life of a gifted, but troubled man.

Sicario

In Spanish, ‘sicario’ means ‘hitman’, so you know this movie is going to deliver on the action. It stars the likes of Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, Jeffrey Donovan, Jon Bernthal, Josh Brolin, and Maximiliano Hernandez. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent, Kate Macy, is enlisted by an elite government task force official to aid in the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past, the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive.

Movies are so expensive. These all look great but it basically costs R500 to watch all of these. And then the lunch or dinner. And the popcorn and drinks. I’ll wait until they are on movie magic
