October has landed and we have some big movie releases hitting local cinemas this weekend, including a sci-fi survival story, a hip-hop inspired retelling, an animated sequel, and the return of Mr. Nicholas Cage.

Here are the movies releasing Friday, 2 October 2015:

The Martian

Matt Damon makes his big-screen return in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi adventure, The Martian. During a manned mission to Mars, astronaut Mark Watney (Damon) is presumed dead after being caught in a fierce storm. He is left behind when the rest of the crew evacuate the planet and begin to head back to Earth. Watney finds himself stranded and alone with only a few meagre supplies on which to subsist, and using his ingenuity, wit, and spirit to find a way to signal home. Despite this, he knows that even if his survival is made known, there is no realistic prospect for a rescue.

WIN: To celebrate the release of The Martian, we have 3 hampers to giveaway, each of which includes a t-shirt, backpack, and headphones.

Straight Outta Compton

You’ve probably already heard of the good reception this film has had, but in case you don’t know about it, here it goes: the film revolves around the rise and fall of the Compton, California hip hop group, N.W.A, and borrows its title from the group’s debut album. In 1988, this groundbreaking new group revolutionised music and pop culture, changing and influencing hip-hop forever. N.W.A’s first studio album, ‘Straight Outta Compton’, stirs controversy with its brutally honest depiction of life in southern Los Angeles. With guidance from veteran manager Jerry Heller, band members Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella and MC Ren navigate their way through the industry, acquiring fame and fortune. They secured a place in history the moment they told the world the truth about life in the ‘hood, which ignited a cultural war.

Mavis and Johnny have a baby boy named Dennis whose lack of any vampire abilities worries his grandfather Count Dracula. When Mavis and Johnny go on a visit to Johnny’s parents, Dracula calls his friends Frank, Murray, Wayne, Griffin and Blobbie to help him put Dennis through a ‘monster-in-training’ boot camp. However, when Dracula’s father, Vlad, arrives at the hotel for an impromptu family get-together, Hotel Transylvania is in for a collision of supernatural old-school and modern day cool.
