Heyneke Meyer has announced the squad to feature in the second Springbok training camp, which features eight new additions.

38 players have been named in the second Springbok training camp of 2013, taking place in Durban, which includes eight players that didn’t feature in the first training camp.

The players that didn’t attend the first training camp, and will now attend the Durban camp, include: Gio Aplon (Stormers, wing/fullback), the Cheetahs’ trio of Trevor Nyakane (prop), Lappies Labuschagne (loose forward) and Willie le Roux (fullback/wing), Bulls duo of JJ Engelbrecht (centre/wing) and Lionel Mapoe (wing/centre), Wiehahn Herbst (Sharks, prop) and Demetri Catrakilis (Kings, flyhalf).

There are a number of players who were omitted from the group due to injury.  JP Pietersen, Jaco Taute, Frans Steyn, Johan Goosen, Duane Vermeulen, Pat Cilliers and Frans Malherbe will not attend the camp as a result of their respective injuries.

Andries Bekker has also been excluded, as a result of his club commitments in Japan later this year.

“It looks like most of the guys are improving weekly and a few new players have put up their hands, which is good to see with the first Test only a few weeks away,” said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

“We’ve also been very impressed with the form shown by a number of players since we were together in April. This camp will provide us with a great opportunity to work with these players before the squad for the Castle Lager Incoming Series is finalised.”

Meyer also explained that overseas South Africans were not part of the selection process as they’re coming to the end of a tough season.

“Overseas-based players were not considered for this camp as some of them are still playing in their respective finals this coming weekend. They are at the end of their seasons and need a well-deserved break before the start of the series,” explained the coach.
