Western Province is looking to retain their Currie Cup trophy this year, but with a wealth of new young stars in the mix, is the combination of Gary van Aswegen and Louis Schreuder the answer to WP’s playmaking questions?

The pairing of van Aswegen and Schreuder could prove a solid selection for the men in stripes, as both players picked up some Super Rugby experience in this year’s tournament, which could help them overcome the big match temperament.

The two players are relatively similar in their vision and approach – with both having strong kicking games and able to run when the opportunity presents itself.

Schreuder’s flat passing style and speed to the breakdown will benefit the WP side greatly in a competition that sure to have an accelerated pace, thanks to the new scrum laws.

Van Aswegen, as shown in the opening round, has incredibly deft hands with his short passes, but also has the ability to spread the ball quickly and accurately with little preparation.

On the other side of the ball, Western Province has always prided itself on its defence, and both players have the ability to successfully make tackles and prevent clean line-breaks. Another strong element to both players’ games is speed. Schreuder and Van Aswegen have shown to have the speed to chase down and get back behind their own advantage-line quickly in order to bolster defence, and this attribute is vital to Western Province, and the Stormers in a larger sense.

With the likes of Damien de Allende, Pat Howard, Cheslin Kolbe and Gio Aplon, Schreuder and van Aswegen’s jobs have become easier this year, as all players have the ability to finish off moves if put into the right spot. That said, it’s going to require great vision and decision-making prowess from the youngsters if they’re to help their team get on the front foot in this year’s competition.
