5 Sports Matches You Need To Watch This Weekend (15-17 May)

It’s weekend, and that means that the sporting fixture list is packed full of some epic encounters taking place over the next few days, and we got you covered with which clashes you’ve got to keep your eyes on.

Chiefs vs Hurricanes (Super Rugby)

The Canes have only beaten the Chiefs twice in their last seven encounters, but are top of the table and will fancy their chances this weekend. The Chiefs have lost eight of their last nine matches away to the Hurricanes. 

This will be the game of the round. No doubt about it. Both sides love to attack and both can finish length-of-the-field opportunities. Expect a tight score but a lot of tries.

Blitzbokke at the London Sevens (Sevens World Series)

Saturday: SA vs France (10:00), SA vs Portugal (13:06), SA vs USA (16:34)

The Blitzboks have relinquished their lead in the overall series standings for the first time since winning round three in Port Elizabeth and are now five points behind Fiji after eight rounds. The outcome of the title is no longer entirely in their hands as they head into the London leg.

Thankfullly, Twickenham has been a happy venue for the Springbok team in recent years, and the Blitzboks will look to draw some inspiration from those results as they battle to secure the World Sevens Series title this week.

Lions vs Brumbies (Super Rugby)

On Saturday afternoon, the Emirates Lions host the Australian Conference leaders, the Brumbies, at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. The last two encounters between these sides – in 2011 and 2012 – were won by the visiting team, but after the Brumbies’ loss to the Stormers, and the Lions impressive comeback win over the Highlanders last week, the Lions will be full of confidence to get another big Australasian scalp under their belts this season. 

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace (English Premier League)

Saturday will be an emotional day at Anfield, as legendary midfielder Steven Gerrard will be playing his final game at home for Liverpool, 

At present Liverpool is fifth in the league with 62 points having won 18 games, drawn 8 and lost 10. They are six points below Manchester United. Their opponents, Crystal Palace, are twelfth in the league with 42 points having won 11 games, drawn 9 and lost 16. They have nothing to lose, but Liverpool has the pride of their captain and season to play for. 

Manchester United vs Arsenal (English Premier League)

The Reds returned to winning ways against Palace at Selhurst Park last weekend after a run of three consecutive defeats, thanks to goals from Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini. Louis van Gaal’s men now have an opportunity to complete a Barclays Premier League double over Arsenal, following this season’s previous win at the Emirates Stadium in November.

The Gunners suffered a shock defeat to Swansea City on Monday night but head north to Manchester with confidence, having beaten United in this season’s FA Cup sixth-round encounter at the Theatre of Dreams.
